Central Plateau REAP Incorporated Society Central Plateau REAP (Rural Education Activities Programme) Inc. is a community-based, not-for-profit organisation providing flexible, lifelong learning opportunities in the Central Plateau region in a manner that is equitable, appropriate, effective and efficient. Central Plateau REAP fills gaps in mainstream education service provision by providing integrated and seamless education initiatives across the Early Childhood, School and Adult Community Education (ACE) sectors. These initiatives combine national priorities for education with local education needs. Central Plateau REAP began in 1979 as a result of government.s introduction of a new programme into selected rural areas of New Zealand to supplement and complement existing educational activities. Central Plateau REAP is one of thirteen Rural Education Activities Programmes spread throughout rural New Zealand. Click here for a list of all REAP's. The area served by Central Plateau REAP, covers a rough triangle from Arohena in the North West, across to Rerewhakaaitu in the North East and down to Tukino village in the south The purpose of the programme is to redress educational disadvantage experienced by rural dwellers in accessing the range and depth of activities enjoyed by their urban counterparts. Early Childhood groups operate in Mangakino and Turangi, offering education, leadership and support for children and their families in a bi-lingual setting. Schools have taken advantage of programmes that might have otherwise been inaccessible to rural schools or unable to be provided because some small rural schools do not have specialist teachers in all curriculum areas. Adults in the community have sought initial REAP help in establishing many groups. With REAP.s assistance such groups as: U3A, Taupo Educational Support Trust (TEST), Sexual Assault Counselling Service (SACS), Youth Project Trust, Standing Strong Charitable Trust and the Virtues Project have developed into independent organizations. Informal learning opportunities have been provided across the spectrum, including Arts, Crafts, Parent Education, Te Reo, Sign Language, Health, Personal Development, Communication Skills, Self Defence, Basic Counselling, Establishing Legal Entities. Central Plateau REAP has as its core philosophy the principles of meeting the identified needs of rural communities in a cross-sectoral and holistic manner through:
